You Can’t Have My Pride!

20170121_131009.pngI had a friend ask me recently why black people were always having to state how proud they are, have different groups, why was there a need to recognize the history, aren’t we all human beings? I asked her, “Are we?”. She looked at me with a bizarre look… Minorities were not included in the creation of the laws of this land. At the time of its creation we were seen as animals and property. So to answer your question, I guess it depends on who you ask. When we say things about Black Pride it’s because at one point we were not allowed to even see ourselves as human, as people, as black, as important.. We were invisible. So that pride comes from knowing that our heritage is powerful, important, strong, and apparently undeniable. We have different groups because we were not allowed (still aren’t) to join your groups. So we have Black Girls Run, Black Girls Ride, Black Girls Rock, etc. Or professional groups like 100 Black Men or the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) etc. We have been told since being dropped on this continent that we do not belong, we do not matter (unless useful to whites), we should be happy for the little afforded us, and we should be quiet until spoken to. If I listed all the inventions and processes that black people were responsible for but never received credit for you’d be speechless. So to all those who do not understand why black people hold on to their pride… Because it is one of the few things that no one can take from us!! #blackgirlmagic #yearofMOVEment2017
